I’m still here.

Posted in all about me with tags , on March 6, 2008 by len20

After weeks of not posting, I just wanted to let everyone know that I’m still here. I’ve just taken a little time off from writing due mostly to a lack of inspiration. Unemployment will do that to you.

But I have a new job working for a Christian School system, and I started today so I think feel my muse returning to me.

The following video has nothing to do with the purpose of this blog – kids, education, orphans, Third World issues, Christian perspectives – but I thought it was funny.

Stupid Economy Cost Me My Job!

Posted in all about me, God's Kids, Ministry, Orphan Care, Rants with tags , , on February 3, 2008 by len20

RecessionI’ve known for about a month that last Friday, Feb. 1 would be my last day at God’s Kids. Now I’m able to tell everyone publicly. To be honest, I think I was hoping that a big semi truck loaded with cash would miraculously pull up to the God’s Kids offices this month with a bewildered driver saying, “They just told me to drop it off here.”

But the truck didn’t come, and our little ministry for orphaned children is tightening it’s belt to weather this economic storm. We all knew this storm was coming. I even wrote about it in previous posts, But that doesn’t help much. I loved this job, and I’ll mourn losing it for a long time to come.

I think God’s Kids, like a lot of other ministries, is in for a rough patch, but they’ll make it through. So far, the ministry has not reduced funding for the orphanages in the field and they plan to keep it that way.

As to the future of this blog, I will probably begin writing on broader topics having to do with the health of the world’s children. As for me, if anyone needs a place to park a big semi truck loaded with cash, I know just the place.

Baby AnnouncementI’m so happy to announce that Madelyn raised $900 for orphaned children!

To all of you who sent gifts, thank you! I’m going to leave the donation link up on my profile page for a little while longer just in case someone wants to put us over $1,000.

The Alternative Baby Shower has been a lot of fun to promote, and as you can see, Maddie is tickled pink by the results.

We’re at $675 for the Alternative Baby Shower. I’m pumped! Lot’s of our family and friends have contributed including Men in the Making, the small group I’m a part of that focuses on our roles as young husbands. Thanks, guys!

The shower will continue through December. I’d love to top $1,000! If you’re interested in helping us get there, check it out.

The End of Blog Silence – I’m a New Dad!

Posted in all about me, alternative baby shower with tags , , , on December 7, 2007 by len20

Last Friday morning at 10:17 AM, my daughter Madelyn came screaming into the world. It was a great moment. Since then I’ve been trying to stay caught up with work, learn how to change diapers (wipe down, not up on girls), and enjoy everything soft and cute about my little girl.

There are a lot of cliches that have become less cliche this week. I really do love the way she smells, and the noises she makes when she’s sleeping and stretching. I love how soft her cheeks are and the time is already going too fast.

As for Madelyn’s work with orphans, well, she has earned a total of $270 for kids less fortunate than her through the Alternative Baby Shower. Way to go Maddie!

The Alternative Baby Shower Is On!

Posted in all about me, alternative baby shower, family, God's Kids, Orphan Care, stewardship with tags , , , , , on November 29, 2007 by len20

Ok, I got enough encouragement from friends and bloggers to make this idea happen. If you have no Idea what I’m talking about, I wrote in a recent post about an idea that Jill (my wife) and I came up with while we were walking our dog. Here’s the idea.

God’s Kids needs a big December in donations to meet the commitments we’ve made to more than 2,000 orphans across the world. Jill and I are having our first baby (anytime now), and lots of people are asking us what our baby needs. Well, the fact is that we live in the land of plenty, and our baby just doesn’t need a whole lot. So we thought, what if we held an alternative baby shower? Instead of our friends and family getting us gifts for our new baby, why don’t we ask them to give to God’s Kids to help orphaned children who know what “need” really means? Oh, and why don’t we invite the whole world to come to this baby shower to help orphans?

So we’ve done it. It’s really easy. Just follow this link to give to orphaned children in honor of Baby Leonard.

I’m really excited about this, and I hope people get into it. The shower will go through the end of the year, and I’ll post updates on this blog and at the God’s Kids site. If you like this idea, and you think that others might like it too, please feel free to invite them to the shower. We need all the help we can get.
